Everything is equal in the snow: all trees, all lawns, all streets, all rooftops, all cars. Everything is white, white, white, as far as you can see. Covered by snow, the well-kept and neglected lawns look the same. The snow hides the shiny newness of a just-bought car as effectively as it does the rust and dents of a ten-year-old one. Everything looks clean and fresh and unmarred by time or use. Snow, like the silent death it counterfeits, is a great leveler.

what, a digicam?

One of the other reasons I activated a YouTube account was to have a place to upload all the videos that I plan on taking now that I got a new digital camera I bought my DW a new digital camera. Heh. I ended up with a Canon A570IS, which I got as much for it’s video capabilities as it’s photographic capabilities. It’s able to do 640×480 video at 30fps until your memory card is full, or the video clip reaches one hour, whichever comes first. Since I just got an 8GB card today (he he) I should be able to do 2 hours of video. That’s crazy.

Why use a digital camera for video instead of a camcorder? I like it because there’s no tapes to get jammed, or mistracking, or anything like that. It’s quick to transfer to the computer to edit, instead of having to transfer it in real time like you do with a camcorder. (I’m assuming a tape based camcorder like MiniDV. If you have a hard drive based camcorder it’s a different story) No moving parts to break down. Takes much better stills than a camcorder does. The only downside is there’s no optical zooming during video, you have to zoom to where you want before you shoot. The stabilization does wonders for shaky video, it almost feels like a SteadiCam. Well, not quite (sorry to all you SteadiCam operators out there, I didn’t mean to offend you). But it’s pretty steady.

Now I just have to remember to hold the camera level, and my videos will be great!

Last Saturday was Daddy day, so I decided to take some pictures of the kids. I broke out the stands, lights and umbrella, and had the kids help me set up and even take some pictures. Here’s one of my favourites!

happy new year

“save the last dance for me”

New Year’s eve is like every other night; there is no pause in the march of the universe, no breathless moment of silence among created things that the passage of another twelve months may be noted; and yet no man has quite the same thoughts this evening that come with the coming of darkness on other nights. ~Hamilton Wright Mabie

one night down, two more to go

well, it’s 9:12, and I’m sitting down in front of my laptop with a cup of tea, brownie cookies, and ready to write. I’ve got a message to finish up tonight, made all the more pressing because I’m on my own for this weekend. Yup, that’s right, N is away at a conference in Calgary, and won’t be back till late Sunday night. So I NEED to finish this up tonight, or I’m not going to be very happy.

a photography update: I got accepted (finally) by iStockphoto. I’m ambivalent about this, because the return on the images sold is miniscule, but I’m proud that I got accepted after numerous attempts and a stern LAST CHANCE warning. If anyone has gone through the process, you know that they are very picky about quality and technical excellence now, so you can’t just submit anything. Anyway, between the time I first applied (May) and now, things have changed. I changed cameras, I inherited a strobe flash, I started paying attention to ‘sharpness’, I calibrated my monitor (^_^) but mostly, I’ve learned more. I’ve learned to suck it up and keep trying. I’ve learned that failure is a great teacher. I’ve learned that when things come easy to you, you don’t appreciate how much there is to improve. I’ve learned that with hard work, I can become the greatest ninja in Konoha! (OK, too much Naruto)

ok, i’m weird. time to get to work! see ya!
