Our new aquarium

For the Linguist’s birthday this year we got an aquarium, and we finally stocked it with some fish last week. Why the delay? Well, when you’re starting out in the fishkeeping hobby, you don’t usually realize that you can’t just buy a tank and add the fish right away, you have to make sure the tank water is cycled and ready to take fish and their, um, byproducts. Otherwise you’ll be putting your fish into an environment that will quickly become a toxic soup.

Well, the tank was finally ready, and we went to the aquarium store to choose some fish. We ended up with 3 Gold Barbs (Puntius semifasciolatus, for those of you keeping score at home) and when we got home, they got names. The Linguist named one Goldifer, and incredibly graciously allowed the Comic to name the other two, who promptly got the names Maisy and Goldie.

It’s now Day 5 of having fish, and they seem to be settling into their new home. We’ll wait another 4 weeks before we introduce any more fish to the aquarium. We’d like a community tank, so we’ll be looking for a few more shoaling fish to add to the mix. I’ve always wanted an aquarium, myself, so I’m appreciating the amount of planning and forethought that’s required. I never knew there was so much to consider when setting up an aquarium.
